This is because increasing muscle mass also increases the body's energy needs, ultimately taking its energy from fat cells once there is no food to burn. Muscle is considered an active tissue while fat is mainly a storage tissue needing less energy to exist in the body. The more muscle you build, the more calories your body will need to burn throughout the day (even while you're sitting at your desk!) 

So, if you change nothing in your diet and begin to add in weight training to your exercise routine, in time, you may not recognize the slimmer figure in the mirror starring back at you!
